Sled Island 2008

c.t.overdrive's Sled Island Preview Wednesday June 25, 2008

Unfortunately, I will have to miss most of the glorious Sled Island festivities. Because of a scheduling conflict, a much deserved trips to Mexico, i won’t be able to attend most of this weekends shows. But that still won’t prevent me from voicing my opinion on the show, so from the massive list of shows this weekend, here are the c.t.overdrive choice picks.

c.t.overdrive Sled Island Preview

First off if you read this on Thursday you’ve already missed it, but check out the THE MAE SHI! at Broken City on Wednesday night. AWESOME, AWESOME!

Second the much anticipated reunited Cryptomaniacs at Vern’s on Thursday night. Manhire’s back from Ottawa for the week and this will be a killer show. Seriously, this is the number one Pshyco-Hilbilly band north of the 49th parallel and they’re alive for one more night. A must see!

That same night old sckool country crooner Carolyn Mark & Matt Master play upstairs at the Legion, while Death Country pioneers Elliot Brood play the basement of the Legion. If you want a good ol’ prairie version of Sled Island this is the show to be at.

Third, you all should know about the big Friday and Saturday night shows at Mewata, but If you didn’t pick up tickets for those shows there’s still some glorious shows on Friday night. In particular, the Suicide Wrists + The Von Zippers at Broken City. Also the RZA plays a show at the Grand. The chance there are slim there are still tickets available for the Wu-Tang Mastermind, but seeing Bobby Digital at the Grand would be surreal.

Fourth on Saturday, if your heading to Metwata, make sure you arrive early to catch Mr. Sony Bravao’s (Jose Gonzalez) blend of Swedish folk: at the Mewata Main stage. Upcoming local band and Cryptomaniacs friends – The Osterich play Saturday at the Legion … That’s of course if your not watching Mogwai.

Also, if that doesn’t make you all excited here’s a couple more ideas. Yo La Tengo play a not so secret intimate show at the Pumphouse Theatre and in addition SIDS play their last show ever!

So there you go, the second annual c.t.overdrive sled island preview. I also want to throw out a generous well done to Zak and his team for another amazing festival line-up!

Also, Trent from Music-critic did a review of last week’s Virgin Fest. Dispite all my bitterness and bickering, it looks like Virgin pulled off a hell of a festival. Hopefully next year we get a better line-up!

Random Thoughts For the June Line-Up War of 2008 Friday May 23, 2008

On one side you’ve got the scrappy street fighter of a youngster in Sled Island Fest. With it’s mix of indie starlets, local punk bands and legendary pshyco-rockabilly acts all convening at the mysterious Mewata Field. (Swear that was torn down to become Millennium Park)

Then on the other side you’ve got the overweight and over-hyped reigning festival champion contender of The Virgin Festival, which is limping into the contest with a tonnes of publicity, fantastic location and sub-par bands.

So here we go Sled Island’s Line-up Vs. The Virgin Festival’s Line-up.

Looks like Sled Island wins this one in a solid knock out.

First – One of the sweetest Baseball T’s I’ve seen in ages. (thanks JoeyTWOwheels for the site link)

Second – Heads up NSFW!

This tattoo helps you see that he is a gross monster and you need to stay away. Dude, you had me at pierced nipples. From Vice’s Do’s & Don’ts

Third – This maybe be bad for work, because the title of the link has the big H!tler in it, but it does a great job of explaining what a meme is. It’s the H!tler video remix meme

My favorite of the remixes is the H!tler reacts to the Canucks

Fourth – Google’s IM messaging service Gtalk now has Twitter capability (via. Mr. Boley)

Fifth – Not only is this a massive old School NES controller coffee table sweet as hell; but it’s actual functioning NES control Hot damn that is sexy as hell. (via. D.C.)

Sixth – So over the week Stephen Colbert ended up on Twitter. In a couple of hours the news was Dugg and Colbert has something like 20,000 followers. I for one was one of them. Not because I’m a Colbert nut, but because he added me to his list. I thought it was pretty cool…

But it turned out to be a big farce.

Hey, you know what give the guy credit for stepping up and admitting it. Plus it was all in good jest and if anyone goes berserk on this guy, the need to take a deep breather.

Seventh – Hey Vancouver-ites you took can make a fool of yourself with Dooce! All hail our Dooce Overlord!

Eighth – Probably the best Nike commercial since the epic Eric Cantana Massive Tanker Boat Duals of the early 2000s. It’s the new SPARQ training commercial.

I case you’re wonder the song’s called List of Demands – Saul Williams. He’s an underground poet who’s recent album is a collaboration with the once great Trent Reznor and I think includes a fantastic cover of U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Nine – Come on people 100 down only 150 more to get my hair pink. Come on you pansy little pufters get your knickers out of a twist and help fight breast cancer.

Holy Toledo Connor! Bad web design, horrible hair color, embarrassing grammar and belligerent insults. What’s next making fun of our mommas?

You bet your candy asses!

Random Thoughts For I Heart T-Shirts Thursday May 8, 2008

This weekend are celebrating one of Caitlin’s kazillion cousin’s birthdays. To celebrate we’re going to the bar and of course we need a theme. What’s better than an I heart T-shirts Theme Party.

Guess which shirt is mine and guess which shirt is hers? By the way this is the best theme since the 80’s Wrestlers of yesteryear.

First – From Mr. Travis Shaw, an article in the Globe and Mail about free being the new profit. There was a similar article in Wired a couple of months ago. This one is very similar and a great read.

Second – I know this is sorta letting the cat out of the bag, but the Sled Island Festival has released it’s schedule for 2008.

Hey! Hey! Organizers of Virgin festival! This is how you field a line-up at an archaic Calgary Landmark.

Congrats Zak! Way to go with the second go around of the festival. It looks like it’s going to be a doozie.

Third – This quote from Kottke caught me completely off guard

… In fairness, the place sounds like a combination corporate HQ with an incorporated family living space, but still. Not noted in the article is the expensive laboratory-grade scanning electron microscope that Ambani uses to locate his teensy penis, for which the 27-story house is compensation. (via

For a guy who is usually so reserved and pleasant, it made me spit my coffee out in epic arch.

Fourth – Only in Canada is this national news.

Fifth – Veer has released an incredibly cool Calgary Font. I’m tearing up with pride for my wonderful city … and trying to justify the 99 dollars for the font.

Six – Shia Lebeouf is hosting SNL this weekend and that link is for the hilarious promos with Andy. (via. Lainey Gossip)

By the way Shia F#$%in ruled in Constantine!

Seventh – My old man has the creepiest phone message on his cell phone. It sounds like Megatron has taken over my dad. What makes it truly funny is that my dad has no idea what or who Megatron is … he probably thinks Megatron is a type of hockey stick or city in Thailand.

Eight – Alright, more SNL stuff.

Yeah its official, Christpoher Walken is a nut job … Either that or the single greatest comedic/non-comedic actor of all time.

Winston Churchill once said – These Eyes are the Windows in to a man’s face.

Good GOD that’s genius!

Nine – While this is what constitutes news in Ireland.

Mux-tacular & Sled Island '08 Monday March 31, 2008

First off, Travis from louderthan is running a contest which is looking for entries of custom designed snowboards. You budding artists out there start sharpening up your illustrator pointers and get cracking.

I mentioned muxtape earlier and all it’s amazing simple genius So, here for you Monday pleasure are a few muxtapes to get you through the beginning of the week.

So there, some music for your ailing souls.

In other music news, with the Imaginary Virgin Fest still struggling to reveal a line, let alone update their site, it looks like “Sled Island”: is back and even released a line-up. I’ll admit with the VF happening I totally thought Zak and his crew would have folded, but it looks like it’s alive and well. Good job guys.

And on another note, I have no fucking idea why I’m posting in this suto-quasi radio voice. I’m gonna blame it on the stupid work schedule of the past two weeks.

Note: No idea why comments were off on this one. Damn you sleep!
