Random Thoughts For The BBoy Stance Tuesday September 27, 2011

Umm… Yeah this video from The Notorious IBE Championships is just… absolutely… sick.

That’s all I have to say. (Thanks to my new favourite site Devour.com for the link)

First – I’ve actually never played any of the Fallout series , which is a shame because I hear that Fallout 3 is based around the District.

Anywho… even without playing the game or being an extreme fan boy, anyone can truly appreciate this handcrafted Fallout Monopoly Game board

Second – It’s been a while since Michael Moore has even appeared on my radar, but this excerpt from his new book – Here Comes Trouble – is pretty gut wrenching.

The agency protecting me had a threat assessment division. Their job was to investigate anyone who had made a credible threat against me. One day, I asked to see the file. The man in charge began reading me the list of names and the threats they had made and the level of threat that the agency believed each one posed. After he went through the first dozen, he stopped and asked: “Do you really want to keep going? There are 429 more.”

Regardless of your own personal take on the man, no one deserves that much hatred. (P.S. If you read the entire excerpt the story does turn out to be a positive)

Third – Umm… Keep this on the downlow, but Myp2p is now Wiziwig. If you are unsure of what that means, don’t worry about.

You’re probably not a broke sports fan.

Fourth – Umm… Retro World War Two Captain America promotional posters… don’t mind if I do.

Fifth – Oh geez, won’t someone think of the KIDS… and of course their ez-bake ovens.

What am I talking about?

Oh, sorry. Does anyone remember that earlier this year, during the middle of the budget crisis, the US Congress made the critical decision to ban incandescent light bulbs. Well… it looks like nobody thought about older versions of the Ez-Bake Oven. So, if you happen to have an Ez-Bake Oven in your garage, you better stock up on incandescent light bulbs or your going to be in trouble.

Sixth – You can all thank Cam Hoff for this heads-up. But just in case you were wondering how the Florida Marlins could possible come back from relative baseball obscurity, then you clearly underestimated the pure stupidity of the marketing department and their ability to create a branding disaster of such epic proportions.

Yes, that’s right, this is the new logo for the Marlins…

Two things to think about.

1) At least the London 2012/Lisa Simpson doing something inappropriate logo, has something to feel better about.

2) Remember when the Marlins were cool and were even featured in Seaquest:DSV… Oh yeah, those were the days.

Seventh – Well that was quick. It appears that the big Gooooogle machine is now throwing some of it’s immense lobbying funds towards Republican lobbyists.

From a political standpoint it makes sense. A big corporation like that does have to cover it’s bases. It’s just, that I kinda yearn for those days when they truly believed in the philosophy of do no evil.

Eighth – Speaking of Google… Well I guess they’re not completely evil.

Ninth – And because I probably destroyed your palette for decent Baseball logo redesigns, here’s a look at the new-old-new Toronto Blue Jays logo.

The best part about this logo is that it’s retro, but not in the horrible-pastel-shoulder-pads-miami-vice Florida Marlins sorta way.

One Step Closer To Fulfilling The Starship Troopers Prophecy Tuesday September 6, 2011

No, no, no. I don’t mean the prophecy that Neil Patrick Harris will either acquire super psychic powers or that he will one day run a intergalactic secret police. No, instead I’m making a reference to the epically cheese-ball futuristic football montage at the beginning of this incredibly bad movie.

Erased every morsel of that horrible movie from your memory. Well of course, I have it here for you.

Anywho, back on track. It’s the beginning of College Season down in the good Ol’ US of A and that means that Saturdays will be a living hell for the next five months. But with that comes new jersey reveals and Football jersey designs which are inching one step closer to the god awful Starship trooper unis. Don’t believe me, just have a look at the new uniforms from The University of Maryland, Oregon Ducks and Boise State.

University of Maryland

University of Oregon

Boise State

See… One step closer to metal footballs and JOFA helmets. (That being said all three jerseys are s.i.c.k.)

Random Thoughts For Garfield As Spiderman Tuesday August 2, 2011

Alright, so it’s quite publicly known that I’m a bit of a Spiderman freak. (see my epic Bachelor Party photos for evidence). So it goes without saying that I am pretty skeptical about the Spiderman reboot . In particular, the casting of Andrew Garfield (the dreamy looking kid from the Social Network… no not Zukerberg or the dude from Napster… The other guy) as Peter Parker.

Sure the third Spiderman movie was an atrocious flick and was clearly influenced by the studios, but Spider-man 2 is easily one of my favorite superhero movies of all time.

Anyways, this clip of Gardfield at Comic-con is starting to warm my cold, dark heart to this somewhat adorable little English nerd… even if Sam Raimi isn’t involved.

FirstKanye West and Jay-Z over top an Otis Reeding track… please, please make sweet, sweet love to my ear drums.

Second – Well if you haven’t seen the article on the Apple store knockoffs then you are probably living under the internet equivalent of a rock. But just in case, here’s a neat article on the plague of Apple store knock-offs popping up all over China.

Hmmm… I do have to wonder though, is the Genius bar appointment system just as ridiculous in China as it is in Suburban DC?

Third – Mashup album of the week Fugazi vs. The Wu-Tang ClanWe taking this mashup to the 13 chambers kids.

Don’t thank me kids, thank the earth’s gravitational pull and of course Mr. Rennie for the link.

Fourth – Now I know that it can be somewhat depressing when a beloved story comes to an end (see my FNL lights thoughts below), but do you really need to purchase a reborn Harry Potter baby to keep the dream alive? No seriously, can’t you just re-read the books? Do you really need a life-like rendition of the characters as a vinyl baby.

I’m just throwing it out there, but purchasing one of these ‘reborns’ is a one-way ticket to becoming a cat lady.

That being said the Dobby creepy baby is pretty twisted… in a good/bad way.

Fifth – Well it’s a good thing the NFL finally came to an agreement and gave all their players universal health care … well… unless of course, you’re one of the employees or angel investors in Sports-themed Foursquare/Gowalla start up Fanvibe, which had to shut it’s doors with the uncertainty of two major leagues being out of business for over a year.

Sorry guys. It always sucks to hear about a great idea being derailed by the foolishness of others.

Sixth – Courtesy of LaughingSquid we have a series of WWII-era Social Media inspired propaganda posters.

SeventhFurious Tactics , a new game from local developers Broken Kings came out this past week. While there are a few great games and apps coming out of Calgary at the moment, I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, as it’s this awesome blend of Shining Force and Starcraft, but with steam-punk inspired Mice vs. Cats vs. Dogs vibe.

It’s an absolute gorgeous game to play and a fun little time killer.

So if you have a moment do check it out. It’s a lot of fun and will only get better as through updates and more aspects of the game are added

Eight – Last week, my wife and I finally watched the series finale of Friday Night Lights.

You probably won’t ever understand the importance of this show on our relationship. Because in a weird way, FNL has been with us every step of the way.
So to say that it wasn’t hard to watch the final episode and to pretend that I didn’t weep like a little boy would be a complete lie. One day, I’ll probably write a full post on why this show was so amazing, but in the mean time watch the compilation of Tammy’s entire five seasons of Y’alls below and read the incredible oral history of the show from Grantland – called Clear Eyes, Full Hearts. (thanks Lyndise and Poploser for the various links)

And with that I’ll leave you, with one piece of advice… WWCTD

Random Thoughts For a Musical Interlude Sunday June 12, 2011

So June is always an awkward month.

Wait, wait, wait, not in that bad Republican Weiner sorta way…

But in the there is so much going on sorta way. Because of which, I thought I would simplify things. Therefore I’m throwing a curve ball in to the pattern and I’m going to do an entire Random Thoughts post on music.

So for your pleasure (and my laziness), please find below a series of random musical links.

First – Yes, you’ve heard the song… and heard it at numerous Flames games… and you’ve possibly even seen the make your own Duck Sauce Remix app, but here is the official video… and… unfortunatly, it’s actually really solid. (Plus, who can’t argue with cameos from Drew Barrymore, Kanye West and ?uestlove)

Second – Yes, this is made far funnier, by actually knowing someone from Portland, but yes this song from the show Portlandia – The Dream of 90s is hysterical.

Third – The HoodInternet, which I’ve probably featured on this site more times than I can bother to count, have released their 5th Mix Tape. One of the tracks on this mix tape is The Clipse (Virginia’s best kept musical secret) vs. Matt & Kim called Virginia is for Cameras.

Yeah, this is how we roll in Arlington… Sorta… Actually, not even close.

Fourth – Alright, if that’s a bit to hipster for your fancy, you can also check out the 8-Bit Zelda remix of Virginia.

Fifth – Of course, from the same HoodInternet mixtape, there is this haunting mash-up of The XX and DMX.

Sixth – This has nothing to do with music, but from a designer angle this series of Design Advice inspired Desktop wallpapers are fantastic.

Oh, yeah they’re also not really safe for work.

Seventh – Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow night (Monday), here’s a great story from Bill Simmons (one of America’s most influential sports writers) on why he’s re-fallen in love with the NHL. From a Hardcore Hockey fan standpoint, I find it fascinating to see how someone could go from being a solid fan to an occasional fan.

Eighth – So was it Dirk determination or was it the veteran experience of Jason Kidd and John Terry that propelled the Mavs to the NBA Championships? Or… maybe … just maybe it was all the High Fives and Ass grabbing?

Ninth – Well here’s a pretty interesting little cover, it’s Weezer take on Radiohead’s Paranoid Android.

21 year old c.t.overdrive would be losing his marbles over this concept… unfortunately, 31 year old c.t.overdrive isn’t really that excited.

Tenth – And last but not least, let’s finish this off with some live QOSTA … Shall we. Yes, let’s do it.
