SXSW 2006

Making an Entry in My Blog Wednesday May 31, 2006

By the way, during SXSW we also thought that making an Entry in my Blog would be a great euphemism for taking a long ridiculous poo.

For example: Sorry Buddy, I can’t talk right now I’ve got to make an entry in my Blog.

Try it. It’s fun. (that’s dedicated to Jon, Billy and Ian)

SXSW: Things to do in Denver when you are... Thursday March 16, 2006

Dead Tired.

From Kalispel we flew back to Denver. It is 1 am and I’m now in the Radisson Hotel in Denver, CO.

I am forever grateful for have grown up with an ex-tour guide mum and a dad who has travelled everywhere. The one key thing they taught me was to travel with patience. It is a skill I will never forget. Because as the unfortunate girl working at the customer service desk mentioned to me – “a direct flight back to Calgary always opens up for a very polite and understanding passenger.”

SXSW: Longhorns Wednesday March 15, 2006

Well, well, well this post gets the righteous honor of being written on the tarmac of Kalispel international airport. Our flight attempted to land in Calgary at around 5:00ish on Wednesday night, but unfortunately a low celling and deteriorating weather conditions diverted us to Kalispel, MT. So the masterminds in Denver have decided that we’ll be returning to Denver for the evening. It is not certain, but all signs point for a night of excitment and airport food in the Windy city ;)

Tuesday was the final day of SXSW interactive festival. As typical with most events the quality of the final day always shows signs of deterioration, so we decided to play a little hookie. While we still managed to catch the closing remarks, most of the day was dedicated to site seeing and rest n’ recuperation.

Austin - Congress Street

In the afternoon we ventured down to South Congress and tried some genuine home cooked southern food. While Ian chose the more sensible vegetarian Lasagna, I (who was still reeling from the aftermath of Nuclear Taco) decided Chicken Fried Beefsteak would be a nice treat. In a previous post one of the main justifications for purchasing the cybershot was to capture those precious moments when I realize I am a complete fucking moron. Let’s add another entry to my catalogue of stupidity.

Chicken Fried BeefSteak

After lunch, Ian and myself went our separate ways. He went back to the Hotel to rest, while I high tailed it for another assault on the University of Texas.

As mentioned there are two pillars to my vacations. One finding dive bars and two checking out colleges and their football stadiums. For some reason I really dig large American colleges. I don’t know why. I just do it. Its my thing and it drives people I travel with crazy.

Either way The University of Texas is situated right beside the Texas Congress building and just north of our hotel. Like most of the campuses I’ve visited, UT is large, beautiful and has that true collegiate vibe. UT is probably most famous for Chalres Whitman Sniper Tower rampage a few years back.

University of Texas Tower

But the best part about UT are the 2005 National Champion Longhorns. As everyone knows Texans really love their football. It’s no joke people in Texas really loves the Longhorns. People in Austin are ravenous about the ‘horns. And I freaking love it! You can’t walk anywhere with out seeing orange and white. At the heart of Longhorn pride is the 85,000 seat Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium.

While the stadium is pretty impressive nothing symbolizes Longhorn pride more than this guy:

Austin Lhorns

Not only is it a beautiful bronze statue, but he’s dropping the Longhorns Hornpack!! Amazing!!! It could be the single greatest statue I have ever laid witness to.

So that kind of sums up my trip to Austin. (Well I guess it’s not really over yet, it might become a Austin/Denver trip.) We didn’t do much Tuesday evening. We caught some more Tex-Mex food and went to the closing party. It was good to see everyone for the last time. We traded music recommendations and mushy farewells.

On a whole Austin was phenomenal. If I ever get home, I’ll wrap this trip up with some my urban observations of Austin (Alright give a guy a some slack, I have to get some mileage out of this useless degree) and my impression of the interactive/creative industry.

So good bye Austin. Hello Denver.

SXSW: SkinnyCorp & Mugshots Tuesday March 14, 2006

There is no point in further detailing the Manhattan colon project (i.e. Nuclear Taco night) any, so I’ll just describe the events which led us to Mugshots and our introduction to Ken Glibson – DWI specialist.

DWI Attorney

Monday’s panels were fairly interesting. The highlight being an intimate Q&A with the skinnycorp founders. As soon as I saw this year’s attendees list I triple bolded this talk as a must see. I love threadless and I’m jealous of the inginutiy of the skinny corp business model.

Conference Hi-Jinxs

For those unfamiliar with skinnycorp, In the past four years the company has developed into a fairly decent 7 million dollar business catering to the refined tastes of its rabid online community. The company has evolved from a small dorm-room office to a 20 person hipster empire. Their entire retail model is centered around a handful of sites:

It was easily the most informative talk of the past few days. It further fueled my fascination with their business model. It was inspring to listen to them describe the dynamics of their online consumer community and how it pretty much controls every element of their business. It was just a little too aggravating to realize they all share my birth year. Oh well, what can one do.

club deville

Like the previous night, the evenings festivities started at the Club Deville for the blooger.com party. After two days of awkward conversations and introductions it was great to finally get everyone to converge in a relaxed atmosphere. While the rest of our nerdy comrades shook their nerdy asses on the dance floor, a handful of us overran the back bar. Once that closed down (at about 9:30) we were shuttled off to another outdoor venue where we meet the King of Stickers.

fwork

This guy was freaking hilarious. He was overflowing with stickers. Every three seconds he’d I either give you a sticker or log one of your quotes into his crackberry. By the end of our conversation I was trying to convince him to incorporate some scottganes-isms for his next sticker run.

LAter in the evening a bunch of use were starting to get jaded with constant conversations about blogspheres, web 2.0 credentials, and xhtml specs. After 3 days of internet bsing we had started to become extremely cynical. In an act of sheer despereation we followed our new found local hero Jon from unsustainabledesign over to the north side of Austin to Mugshots.

Before I go any further, a ct vacation, wouldn’t be a ct vacation if I didn’t end up in a dive bar. It just wouldn’t be the same. For this trip Mugshots was that dive bar. As the name says it was adorened with mugshots of celebrites and patrons. At the time we arrived there was only two patrons and the bar tender. Of the three people there two had been to prison. One had been to ever prision in the state of texas. He even recommed Ken Gilbson as a great DWI actually. Actually pretty much everone at the bar had used Ken Gilbson. The coasters at the bar had Ken Gilbson’s info on them. Even the matches had Ken’s info on them. After learning more about Ken, the bartender gave use a couple promotional lighters as parting gifts. Nothing like a DWI attorney who advertises on a lighter/bottle opener.
