808s & Sea Changes Monday December 8, 2008

Forgive me for the lack of updates on the old c.t.overdrive. As usual with this time of year, I’ve been mentally preoccupied with narrowing down this year’s batch of records into a compressive and surgical top five list. And while I struggle with this inner turmoil, I have to admit that I am starting to really warm up to Kanye West’s controversial 808s & Heartbreak record.

I get, that it’s a dramatic departure from Kanye’s over top regular records and one that is polarizing music lovers, but I have to admit (not like it’s really shocking or anything), but I am really falling in love with its melancholy and lo-fi feel. Someone’s going to call this blasphemy, but I liken it to Beck’s Sea Changes.

Alright, now it’s time to get back to the yearly debate…

I don’t dislike the record because it’s different, I dislike it because it’s not very good.
