Black Cadilliacs Tuesday March 20, 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve been guilty of being a music fan boy for any upcoming CD. But the new Modest Mouse CD – We Were All Dead Before The Ship Sailed has gotten me all hot and bothered for months now.

Their last record Good News for People who Love Bad News fucking floored me. But we’re talking floored in the most organic and unexpected way. I saw them live a couple of months before it came out and Issac Brock was absolutely loaded. We are talking ridiculously stupid drunk. Either way it was a decent show, but to me they just seemed like a drunken Amish Coldplay. I left fairly unimpressed and wondering what all the hype was about… Man, was I ever wrong.

I don’t know if it’s the Johnny Cash-esque – f-off bravado of Brock’s vocals or it’s the lyrical tales of alcoholic self-destruction and the tragic hero; either way Good News for People who Love Bad News, is as strongly ingrained in my psyche as wristbands and unkempt sideburns are apart of my wardrobe. That’s right these sideburns are fake! Even after their lack luster performance I picked up a copy of Good News a few days after it’s release. Since that day it has rarely left my CD rotation.

Anyways, to celebrate Tuesday’s release I decided to post a list of the lyrics that have become a huge part of my every day vocabulary. And yes feel free to laugh at the weirdness of this post, but I know there are a couple people out there that take lyrics to heart just like I do.

5. Bukowksi – If I had a nickel. If I had a nickel.

Woke up this morning and it seemed to me / that every night turns out to be / A little more like Bukowski. /And yeah, I know he’s a pretty good read. / But God who’d wanna be? / God who’d wanna be such an asshole?

4. Good Times are Killing Me – Nothing reminds me more of those dark afternoons at the Den or at the Elephant and Castle, than this song.

Get sucked in and stuck in late nights / with more folks that I don’t know. / The good times are killing me / Have one, have twenty more “one mores” and oh it does not relent.

3. The View

As life gets longer, awful feels softer / Well it feels pretty soft to me. / And if it takes shit to make bliss, / then I feel pretty blissfully.

2. Ocean Breathes Salty – I can’t imagine a more painful insult. Hey you! You’re a complete waste of life. Thanks for coming out. Snap.

And said “Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell / are really there, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.” / You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death? /
You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste death?

1. Black Cadillacs – I can’t wait for Deleware, San Antonio and Eugene Turner. (j/k)

And it’s true we named our children / After towns that we’ve never been to.
